Finance Minister Lauds BoSS’ Currency Centre as Pillar of Economic Stability

By:Daniel Mareng Wek Magok

Speaking during grand opening of the Bank of South Sudan Rumbek currency Centre on 1st November 2025, National Minister of Finance and Planning Hon. Athian Diing Athian said: I am deeply honoured to join you today at the launching of the Currency Centre of the Bank of South Sudan, an important event in the economic history of our beloved Nation.

The establishment of the Currency Centre demonstrates readiness to strengthen and transform the Bank of South Sudan into a competitive and modern Central Bank.

The Currency Centre complements broader Public Financial Management (PFM) reforms and macroeconomic stabilization efforts undertaken by the Government. This Centre comes at a time when the Ministry of Finance and Planning and Bank of South Sudan are reinforcing the use of the South Sudan Pound (SSP) in all transactions, both in the public and private sectors. The Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank are working closely to ensure that all government institutions and businesses quote and transact in local currency to protect our economy from excessive dollarization. The currency center is pivotal in ensuring financial sovereignty by enhancing our ability to manage and control our currency, which is the lifeline of our economy.

Ladies and Gentlemen, as a Minister of Finance and Planning, I am fully aware of the complex economic challenges our nation is facing. However, we are prepared and optimistic about the robust solutions that are put in place to turn things around for the better. In addition to economic stability, the facility represents an investment in our people. It is set to generate employment opportunities, foster skill development, and which is in line with the vision of SPLM of taking towns to the people.

Our people are our greatest assets, and investing in this human capital is paramount to achieving the long-term prosperity we envision. Appreciation and Partnership Once again, I extend my sincere appreciation to Governor, Dr. Addis Ababa and your dedicated team for this great achievement. Ideally, this should be a Christmas gift to the family of the Bank of South Sudan. Together, we are building a foundation for a strong, stable, and inclusive economy, anchored on trust in our national currency and financial institutions. Let this milestone inspire continued collaboration toward a prosperous and self-reliant South Sudan.

May God bless the people of South Sudan, may God bless our President Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, may God bless the Bank of South Sudan.
