Juba, August 5, 2025- South Sudan is scheduled to join the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) by the end of August 2025. This comes after a recent visit by the Governor of Bank of South Sudan, Hon. Dr. Addis Ababa Othow, and his team to Kenya, where they had important meetings with AERC Executive Director, Prof. Victor Murinde.

“Bank of South Sudan’s economists will receive training in macroeconomic modelling, research, and forecasting. said Prof. Murinde. He further revealed plans to finance PhD studies and staff participation in the AERC PhD Twinning Programme to support institutional capacity in evidence-based policymaking.
Dr. Othow cited the Bank’s ongoing reform, empathizing that BoSS would benefit in extensive scientific research to enhance currency management among others.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been drafted to formalize the cooperation, such as in policy research topics, graduate capacity building, and the strengthening of evidence-based economic policy through national and regional networks. The MoU is to be signed in Juba within August.
Formed in 1988, the AERC works closely with African Finance Ministries and Central Banks to foster macroeconomic policy formulation and communication with institutions such as the IMF and World Bank.
