Africa Financial Industry Summit Addresses Financial Issues

By Joseph Chol Dut,

Lomé, Togo, 16th November 2023 — The Africa Financial Industry Summit (AFIS), held in Lomé, Togo, from 15th – 16th November 2023, brought together key stakeholders from across the African financial landscape, including industry leaders, policymakers, and development partners, to brainstorm on financial issues and chart a path forward.

The summit, which served as a platform for dialogue and knowledge exchange, addressed the critical issues such as financial inclusion, digital finance, and sustainable finance, among others.

Held annually in Lomé, Togo, the AFIS provides an ideal platform for South Sudan to explore collaboration opportunities with West African banks. Judging from engagement and observations, potential areas of cooperation include but are not limited to the following:

· Expanding access to financial services: West African banks can leverage their expertise in mobile banking and other innovative financial solutions to reach underserved communities in South Sudan.

· Supporting infrastructure development: Access to finance is crucial for infrastructure development, which is essential for South Sudan’s economic recovery. West African banks can also play a role in financing infrastructure projects.

· Promoting financial literacy: Financial literacy is key to enabling South Sudanese individuals and businesses to make informed financial decisions. West African banks can collaborate with local organizations to promote financial literacy initiatives.

In closing, the Bank of South Sudan delegation that attended the event noted that it presented a unique opportunity for South Sudan to forge partnerships with West African banks.
