BoSS Rumbek Currency Centre: From Vision to Reality, Where Did It All Begin?

BoSS Rumbek Currency Centre: From Vision to Reality, Where Did It All Begin?

By: Daniel Mareng Wek Magok

Juba, 3rd November 2025- What began as a vision in 2013 has now become a reality. Several years ago, the then-BoSS Governor Hon. Koryom Mayiik, along with Dr. Addis Ababa Othow, who was then serving as part of the Bank’s senior management, together with Hon. Rita Nyankiir Akoon, stood in Rumbek to lay the foundation stone for what would become a landmark of South Sudan’s financial infrastructure, the Rumbek Currency Centre.

The foundation was laid by President H.E. Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, marking a commitment to expanding financial services across the country and bringing banking services closer to the people. The completion of this magnificent facility fulfills that promise. That symbolic moment represented more than the start of a construction project. It signaled the birth of a national vision rooted in institutional growth, financial decentralization, and improved service delivery for the people of South Sudan.

The project was first awarded to a Chinese company, but the work remained unfinished due to electrical faults and water leakage in the building. To address these issues, the Bank handed the project to Dreams Engineering Company, a South Sudanese firm, with the goal of rebuilding the Currency Centre and ensuring it meets modern national standards. The team worked hard to correct all electrical faults, stop water leakage, and upgrade the building’s systems to a professional and reliable level.

Today, history has come full circle. Hon. Dr. Addis Ababa Othow, now Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, and Hon. Rita Nyankir, now Deputy Governor, returned to Rumbek not to lay a foundation, but to officially inaugurate the fully completed Rumbek Currency Centre.Their presence at both the beginning and the realization of this project tells a compelling story of visionary leadership, continuity, and dedication. It demonstrates how persistence and foresight can transform an idea into a lasting achievement, one that strengthens national institutions and will serve generations to come.

The Rumbek Currency Centre now stands as a testament to that journey, a proud symbol of progress, institutional resilience, and the unwavering pursuit of financial inclusion and stability for all South Sudanese. The facility features a three-floor main building that includes spacious offices with clean water and proper sanitation, large meeting rooms, a clinic, kitchens, and dining halls. Secure currency vaults, built to the highest safety standards, are located in the basement to safeguard financial operations.

The compound includes wide parking areas for staff and visitors, smooth paved roads, and advanced security systems, including fencing, three gates, and night lighting. On the western side of the compound sits a powerhouse equipped with strong generators that supply stable electricity to the entire facility. On top of the main building is a beautifully designed rooftop, giving the structure a modern and unique look.

One of Dr. Addis Ababa Othow’s major visionary programs has been the expansion of Bank operations in line with the Bank of South Sudan Act 2011, as amended in 2023.To date, the Bank has extended its presence to Wau, Malakal, Nimule, Yei, and Aweil, completed fencing and foundation works for staff quarters in Kuajok, and is currently constructing the Juba main branch.

The Bank has also secured land in Bentiu, Panriang, and Yambio for future development. Last year, President H.E. Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit inaugurated Bank of South Sudan first-ever twelve-floor building in Juba, which now serves as the BoSS headquarters.Governor Dr. Addis Ababa Othow Akondit applauded the support and guidance of President H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, as well as the dedication of Bank officials for working together as a united team to achieve this milestones.
