By Daniel Mareng Wek Magok, Bangkok;

Bangkok, Thailand, October 13, 2026- – Bank of South Sudan Governor Hon. Dr. Addis Ababa Othow has participated in a high-level meeting of governors from Sub-Saharan Africa, organized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), to discuss digital payment innovation and the future of financial systems in the region.

The meeting focused on strengthening cross-border financial connectivity, harmonizing regulatory frameworks, and improving coordination in governance and monetary policies.

IMF presentations highlighted practical experiences in digital innovation and the institutional capacity needed to modernize financial systems.

During the discussions, central bank governors acknowledged the importance of embracing digital payment technologies and called for stronger regional cooperation to modernize core payment infrastructure, particularly Real-Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) systems, to improve liquidity management, operational efficiency, and financial system resilience.

The governors also underscored the benefits of digital payments, including faster transactions, lower transaction costs, improved financial inclusion, greater transparency, and more efficient cross-border trade and payments.
