Roads key to development

JUBA, 10th January 2024: Minister of Transport, Simon Majok has stressed the importance of roads to the economy, at the event held at Rock city, on Thursday, to launch the construction of internal roads as per the directives of H.E. President of South Sudan, General Salva Kiir Mayardit.

The minister expressed his satisfaction with the coordination among key ministries and the Central Bank to achieve economic development. “The internal roads will ease the movement of goods, and people, and reduce the traffic jams. The roads will enhance the security along the roads through clearing hideouts of criminals,” he said.

Majok thanked President Kiir for prompt intervention to construct the internal roads, which would further production and enhance trade that could further avail an opportunity for the government to collect taxes.

For his part, the Central Bank governor called for collective work and coordination among the ministries to achieve economic development through the road network that would spur production and advance trade as well. “The crucial role of the Central Bank is to settle the road bills,” he said, noting that “2024 will be a year of development.”

The event was also graced by the Governor of Central Equatoria State, Minister of Finance and Planning, Dr. Barnaba Baak Chol, and other dignitaries.
